Animal imitators in Chinese martial arts must be able to project both the obvious and subtle characteristics of that animal. This practitioner takes on many of the surface gestures and nervous twitches of the monkey, but also enters into its playful spirit. On Emei Shan itself, monkeys are so familiar with tourists they frequently will rifle through a shouldered rucksack or bag in search of food wilfully discarding cameras and other valuables! Sadly, in this pattern, we see more mimickery than martial arts, but it is worth noticing the flexibility of this practitioner's hips that allow him to enter into crouching stances so comfortably.
