In this two man pattern the spear takes the defensive role. The spear is a long range weapon so once the attacker wielding the broadsword and crutch (both short range weapons) is able to enter close in, all the spearman can do is use the shaft of his weapon to block the strikes and rely on the flexibility of his waist and the speed of his footwork to try to open up the distance he needs to gain an advantage. As soon as he gains that distance the spear head shoots forward to deliver a lethal strike . for safety, all the spear strikes in this pattern are targeted just above the shoulder to the side of the head.
